Match of the Day is still there but as far as live football goes - it is all over for the methodist minister's son. After commentating on Spain v Germany in the final of Euro 2008, Motson handed back to Gary Lineker and that was it.

He has had a long and distinguished career and has been the #1 man at the BBC for most of his career, only briefly losing out to his long time BBC colleague Barry Davies in the mid-90's for the big games. As much as I respect and admire Motty for what has been a fine career, he has been past his sell-by date for a good while now. Barry Davies has long been seen by me and most people that I know to of been a better commentator and the way the Beeb chose Motty ahead of him for most of his career was very shabby - and that is being kind.

I'm not sure where the BBC goes from here as Jonathan Pearce is not the answer. Does Steve Wilson or Guy Mowbray step up to the top job? I'm not sure but we've got a while to wait before we find out - the BBC's next live game won't be til the World Cup in 2010.

Goodbye and Good riddance.

He has been past his sell-by date for the best part of the last decade - yet he still got all the big games ahead of Barry Davies. Shame on you BBC, shame on you!

I think people should stop jumping on the 'Motty is past it' bandwagon. If he was truly past it then don't you think the BBC would've made a move to get rid of him? Clearly they thought that Barry Davies was not as good as Motty throughout the majority of his career and people should just deal with that.

Oh c'mon Glenda - he's been awful for ages. I think he should be happy that the Been put up with him for as long as they did. Barry Davies was a far superior commentator.
